Insurance for Moving

Moving insurance estimation

In a lot of cases considered as the most misunderstood and problematic issue in the moving contract.

Calculating the insurance:

The insurance amount is a result of your total goods weight, number of rooms and the contents.

Moving Inventory List

Before moving you should create an accurate list of all items that will be moved:

  • Index your items and categorize them by room for your convenience and later moving necessities.
  • Make sure all items are necessary, try not "dragging" items which are chipper buying new then moving.
  • Next to each item its value. Consider current market rates in this stage.
  • Use another column to write down the condition of the item (scratched / broken / excellent / dent / bent / rusted and such).
  • Total all items in the list. (each page separately and all pages total)
  • Take as many photos possible of your items to prove their condition prior to move incase of any damage / lost.
  • An even better option is walking through the entire house with a video recorder to document as many items and their prior to move condition.

There are three levels of insurance you can use to protect you household goods during the moving process and are supplied by a moving company:

Restricted Legal Responsibility

Using the minimum insurance coverage required by federal law. This option will be usually presented to you as a "free insurance" gift from your moving company.

This insurance policy doesn't really cover any valuables, but it is better then no moving insurance at all, as it covers only up to 30 cents per pound in local moves and up to 60 cents per pound on long distance moves for any lost or damages item.

For example: let's say your BSTV (Big Screen TV) which is valued more then $1,500.00 has fell during the moving process and the screen was broken. The TV weight is only 80lbs and therefore what you'll receive after filing a claim in the moving company costumer service and after some time is: 80lbs double 0.60/0.30 cents per pound, a total of $48.00 or $24.00 depending on the move type. (long distance / local)

In order to best insure your goods and their proper value BestMovingQuotes.com are not recommending this "insurance" policy.

The Self Evaluation Method

In this insurance method you are to evaluate each item for its worth and based on your valuation, you will pay a premium of 1% or less of the value to cover it.

For example: a 2,000 pounds shipment valued at $3,500 you will need to pay $35 to insure the value you determined.

Notice the following with this sort of moving insurance:

•  There's usually a self deduction fee of about $500.

•  The insurance will cover only items packed by your carrier, unless proven the entire box was damaged by the mover.

•  Contrarily to other insurance policies, it must be proven beyond any doubt that the damage is under the carrier responsibility.

Full Value Protection

Most recommended and obviously more expensive insurance offered by moving companies.

This insurance policy guarantees a full item replacement for any item which cannot be repaired with either a cash settlement or an item replacement.

Cash settlements will be made in considerations of current market value.

Check for exact cost of the insurance with your mover.

Homeowner's Insurance

A great supplement to the movers insurance is using your homeowner's insurance.

Most homeowner's insurances cover about 10% of your household good also while in transit, but that policy too included a self deduction fee.

Moving Insurance Company

Consider purchasing a short-term insurance from a third-party insurance company.

Insuring your goods during the move with a professional insurance company is the most reliable method for this issue and is highly recommended when your items value is high.

Other Claim Information:

A customer can only file a claim until 9 months after the move, after this period the claim will not be valid. If after 30 days the moving company had not acknowledged your claim or if they did acknowledged but did not resolve it or offered a settlement you think is fair you can and should sue the mover. Prior to the moving process it is recommended to check your moving company record for handling claims, and you can do so with the help of the Better Business Bureau .

The costumer is obligated to pay for the move even though there might be damage or a settlement had not been reached.

Only by a suit or settlement you will be able get a refund for damages or lost during the move.

Electronic Items

The moving company is not responsible for any electronic item that does not function after the move unless you can prove beyond any doubt that the item was dropped or mishandled during the move.

Only with a third-party professional moving insurance you could file for a compensation for this item, depending on the insurance you have purchased.
