Changing your address could be quite a hassle. In order to help you with the process we've created a check list to help you on this move challenge.

But first we will describe with details the entire process in order to get everything clear and not miss any part.

First thing you would need until settle updating all your services providers (cable / phone / electric / gas and other) is to make sure all mail received at your old residence will be automatically forwarded to your new residence address. Once setting your new address with the USPS you can calmly start updating your other service providers about your new address. Of course you should set important and expensive services to be suspended, disconnected or moved to the new address.

Services need to be updated:

  • Local phone service – most companies will require a signed fax, the form you can either find on their website or by calling to the company customer service.
  • Long distance phone service – same guidelines as local phone service apply.
  • ISP – Internet Service Provider – same guidelines as local phone service apply.
  • Electricity / Gas – same guidelines as local phone service apply.
  • Hospital / Medical – doctors / dentists – Don't forget to pick up all your medical records as you are about to relocate new residence. Receive references to doctors at your new residence area, from your current doctors.
  • Credit Card / Bank Accounts – Go to your local bank branch to make the proper address adjustments.
  • Newspaper and magazines subscriptions – Usually the address update or any other subscription change could be made over the phone.
  • Clubs or Associations – Notifying by phone is usually enough, but a personal goodbye gesture is always recommended. If a participation fee is involved make sure it is either stopped / suspended or if you wish to continue participating at your new residence supply them with your new address, usually they will provide you with a form for this matter.
  • Insurance – contact your insurance agent to perform to required changes.

 

Personal – Settings:

  • Voter Registration – to participate in the elections you must register your self as a resident of your new state. Follow the instructions as written in the EAC website at http://www.eac.gov/register_vote_forms.asp .
  • Don't forget to update any other mail service providers such as Fed-Ex and Ups you are registered at.
  • Don't forget notifying the following about your upcoming move:
    • Friends and family
    • Schools / College – which any member of your family is registered at.
    • Charities / Associations / Groups
    • Employees and Employer – which will need to keep in touch with you.

As much as you may not like it, updating the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) is another essential part of your change of address process.

Social Security
